Arthur Serratelli (born April 8, 1944) is the current bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson in northern New Jersey.

Early life

Serratelli is a Newark, New Jersey native and attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Ironbound section of Newark. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in 1961. He attended Seton Hall University for 2 years then moved to the Darlington section of Mahwah, NJ where the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception was located. After 2 years of Philosophical studies he was sent to Rome where he attended the Pontifical Gregorian University and resided at the Pontifical North American College.

As a Priest

Ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1968, Serratelli worked in a parish for a short period of time and then was quickly appointed to teach at the seminary. Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety sent him back to Rome where he attained two advanced degrees, STD (Doctorate in Sacred Theology) and SSL (Licentiate in Sacred Scripture).

He returned to the Archdiocese of Newark after completing his degrees and continued to teach scripture at Seton Hall University School of Theology for about 20 more years. Serratelli also held other positions during this time, including rector of the College of the Immaculate Conception Seminary at St. Andrew's Hall. His Holiness, Pope John Paul II named him a Prelate of Honor and he received the title of Monsignor in 1998.

While serving in the Archdiocese of Newark, he was a member of the following: College of Consultors, Commission for the Men's Apostolate, Finance Council, Presbyteral Council, and the Priestly Vocations Board.

As a Bishop

Consecrated a bishop by then Archbishop Theodore McCarrick (the Co-Consecreators were Bishop Michael Angelo Saltarelli and Bishop Paul Gregory Bootkoski), Serratelli became the vicar for Essex County and Titular Bishop of Enera. After McCarrick was sent to Washington, D.C. and John J. Myers became the new Archbishop, Serratelli became Vicar General for Newark.

As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Washington, DC, he serves as chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, chairman of the Ad hoc Committee for the Review of Scripture Translations and is a member of the following: Task Group on Liturgy with Children, Task Force for the Review of the Lectionary, Ad hoc Committee for the Review of the Catechism, Ad hoc Committee for the Spanish Bible for the Church in America, Committee on Doctrine, Committee on the American College of Louvain, and Committee for Women in the Church and Society. In addition. he is a member of the following: Board of Bishops of the New Jersey Catholic Conference; Board of Trustees at Assumption College, Mendham, NJ; Board of Trustees at the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ; Board of Trustees at Seton Hall University and Board of Overseers at Immaculate Conception Seminary.

In 2004 Serratelli attained his current position as Bishop of Paterson. He is also the representative for the United States on the International Commission on English in the Liturgy. He is the co-chairperson for the Vatican of the International Theological Consultation between Catholics and Baptists. In November 2007, he took over the Chairmanship of the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship.
