IFC (also known as the Independent Film Channel) is a Canadian English language category 1 digital cable specialty channel which features independent films, documentaries, and television series about the film making process and the world of film-makers.

IFC is a wholly owned property of "CW Media", a joint venture between Canwest and GS Capital Partners. Its name is licensed from the American company Rainbow Media, the owner of IFC.

Programming

Like its US namesake, the channel originally focused almost exclusively on smaller independent films. However, it has more recently broadened its programming to include more mainstream films from large production studios. It has also started to de-emphasize the use the full Independent Film Channel name, instead using the IFC acronym, possibly due to the shrinking number of independent films in its programming line-up.

History

IFC was originally licensed to Salter Street Films as "The Independent Film Channel Canada" on November 24, 2000 by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Shortly after the licence was granted, Alliance Atlantis (AAC), who was denied a similar licence by the CRTC in 2000, purchased Salter Street Films and took control of the channel before its launch in 2001. On August 15, 2001 the channel was launched as "Independent Film Channel" (IFC).

On January 18, 2008, a joint venture between Canwest and GS Capital Partners bought Alliance Atlantis and gained AAC's interest in IFC.
