Siston

Siston is a small village in South Gloucestershire, England.

As with placenames of great antiquity it has been recorded variously over the years as Siston, Sistone, Syton, Sytone and Systun.

The village consists of a number of cottages and farms centered around St Anne's Church, and the grand Elizabethan manor house of Siston Court. Historically the village was surrounded by Siston Common but this has recently been eroded by the construction of the Avon Ring Road and housing developments.

The settlement is thought to have early origins, and Roman remains have been found in the area. The Domesday Book of 1085 records the parish of Siston among the lands of the Norman warlord Roger de Berkeley.

St Anne's Church has an 11th century Norman south porch with rounded notched arch and tympanum, and 13th or 14th century tower. The baptismal font is made of lead, unusual in England, and dates from reign of William II, 1087 to 1100. During the English Civil War the Roundheads stabled their horses in the Church.

iston Court

Grade one-listed Siston Court was built by the Dennys family in the late 16th century. The later lodge, gatehouse and pair of ogee-roofed octagons were designed by Sanderson Miller.

Little remains of the original formal gardens, which are now chiefly lawns and parkland, with a substantial ha-ha and pond, and a lime tree avenue from the lodge.
