At the time of its foundation, the Central Committee consisted of:

** Gholam Destaguir Panjsheri
** Tahir Badakhshi
** Charoullah Chapour

* Non-permanent members

** Dr. Akbar Chah-Wali
** Abdoul Karil Missaq
** Suleiman Laeq
** Mohamed Hassan Bareq Chafeï
** Hafizullah Amin
** Ismaïl Danesh
** Abdul Hakim Charayi Jowzjani
** Abdul Majid
** Zaher Ofoq Qandahari
** Dr. Zaher

he PDPA held its First Congress on January 1, 1965. Twenty-seven men gathered at Taraki’s house in Kabul, elected Taraki PDPA Secretary General and Karmal Deputy Secretary General, and chose a five-member Central Committee (or Politburo).

By 1984, eight of the thirteen members and alternate members of the Politburo were Parchamis:

**Karmal Babrak,
**Sultan Ali Kishtmand,
**Najibullah,
**Nur Ahmad Nur,
**Muhammad Rafi,
**Anahita Ratebzad, Abdul Qadir, and Mahmud Baryalai (Karmal's brother). Muhammad Aslam Watanjar, Salih Muhammad Zeary, Muhammad Ismail Danesh, and Ghulam Dastagir Panjsheri, were Khalqists (the affiliation of an alternate member, Abdul Zahoor Razmjo, is unclear).
