List of Canadian senators

List of Canadian senators

This is a list of current members of the Canadian Senate.

Currently, there are sixteen vacancies in the Senate: four in Quebec, three in British Columbia, three in Nova Scotia, two in Ontario, one in Newfoundland and Labrador, one in New Brunswick, one in Prince Edward Island, and one in the Yukon.

The province of Quebec has 24 Senate divisions which are constitutionally mandated. In all other provinces, a Senate division is strictly an optional designation of the senator's own choosing, and has no real constitutional or legal standing. A senator who does not choose a special senate division is considered a senator for the province at large.

1 Senators are appointed by the Governor General of Canada listed on the recommendation of the prime minister listed beside.

2 Senator Raymond Lavigne has temporarily been removed from the Liberal Caucus for allegedly misusing Senate funds for personal use but still identifies himself as a Liberal Senator.

3 Senator Marjory LeBreton is the Leader of the Government in the Senate

4 Senator Dyck was appointed as a Senator representing the New Democratic Party but the NDP has announced that she will not be accepted as a member of the party's caucus and is not recognized by them as a New Democrat. She designates herself as "Independent NDP".

5 Senator Hervieux-Payette is the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate

enators who have resigned to run for the House of Commons

Very few Canadian Senators have ever resigned their seat to run for a position in the Canadian House of Commons, but six have done so successfully.

1 De Cotret resigned from the Senate to run in the 1980 election, but was unsuccessful. He was elected in the 1984 election, however.

After Robert Manion resigned as Conservative Leader in 1940 Arthur Meighen was selected to serve as the Party Leader once again and resigned from the Senate to run in or a seat in the House of Commons. He was defeated by the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation candidate Joseph Noseworthy in York South with the aid of Prime Minister MacKenzie King despite Ontario Liberal Party Premier Mitchell Hepburn's endorsement. Since then no party has selected a leader from the Senate again.

In 2000, Bernard Boudreau resigned from the Senate to run as a Liberal candidate for the House of Commons, but was defeated in the 2000 election.
