Kabete

Kabete

Kabete is a town just outside Nairobi borders in the Central Province of Kenya. Administratively, Kabete is a location in the Kikuyu division of the Kiambu District. Kabete is also name for one of the five constituencies in the Kiambu district.

Kabete and its environs is inhabited mostly by Kikuyu people. Kabete location has a total population of 29308 (1999 census [http://www.worldbank.org/research/povertymaps/kenya/ch5.3.1.pdf] ).

A study in 2005 revealed that Kabete constituency has the least poverty rate in Kenya [http://www.ilri.org/ilripubaware/uploaded%20files/TS_051102_001_TheGreatDivide.pdf] . However, most residents live off farming and are not particularly rich.

Anthropologist Louis Leakey was born in Kabete. His nickname was Giteru and hence the reference Kabete gwa Giteru (Meaning Kabete, Giteru's place).
