United States Naval Ship or USNS is the prefix designation given to non-commissioned ship of the
United States Navy. These are usually auxiliary support vessels that are in service, but are crewed by civilians (either as direct employees of the Department of the Navy, or as employees of a firm which contracts to the USN).
