Fons Hickmann

Fons Hickman is a German graphic designer and professor for Communication Design at the University of the Arts Berlin.

Activities

Hickmann studied Photography and Communication Design in Düsseldorf and Aesthetics and Theory of Media in Wuppertal.

Together with Gesine Grotrian-Steinweg he runs the studio Fons Hickmann m23 in Berlin. The development of complex communication systems, corporate design, editorial design, books, poster and web design are the main focus of the team. In 2001 Fons Hickmann m23 won the competition for the corporate design of the Kieler Woche.

His works are represented at all international design biennials. Hickmann is professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. Previously he taught at the Universities in Essen and Dortmund. He is a member of the Type Directors Club New York, the Art Directors Club Germany and the "Alliance Graphique Internationale".

Together with some colleagues Hickmann promoted the initiative 11 Designers for Germany which tried to bring a consciousness for graphic design into the public sphere and received large scale media attention in order to prevent the adoption of an embarrassing logo for the soccer world cup in Germany in 2006.
