ETR 450

ETR 450 ("ElettroTrenoRapido 450") was the first Italian tilting train (also called Pendolino).

The project was started in the 1970s by FIAT Ferroviaria, the first train entering in service on the line Rome-Milan in 1989. Every train is made up of 9 units, with tilting boogies loosely inspired to those of the British Advanced Passenger Trains.

The trains can reach a maximum speed of 280 km/h. The ETR 450 is currently in use on the Rome-Bari, Rome-Ancona-Rimini and Genoa-Florence lines, although it is being replaced by more modern Pendolino-technology ETR 460/480 and by the even faster ETR 500.
