Carey Young (born 1970) is a visual artist who incorporates a variety of media such as video, photography, performative events and installation into her works, which investigate the increasing incorporation of the personal and public domains into the realm of the commercial. Young's projects often center onnotions of language, training and performance, and take an ambiguous political stance in order to create a web of complex associations and questions for the viewer.

Born in Lusaka in Zambia in 1970, Young studied in England at Manchester Polytechnic, the University of Brighton and photography at the Royal College of Art in London. She has dual US/UK nationality.

She has exhibited her work at galleries including the ICA, [ [http://www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/exhibitionInfo/exhibition/66740 artfacts.net] ] the Whitechapel Art Gallery, [ [http://www.whitechapel.org/content414.html whitechapel.org] ] the Hayward Gallery, Secession, [ [http://www.secession.at/art/2001_ausgetr_e.html secession.at] ] Kunstverein Munich, [ [http://www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/exhibitionInfo/exhibition/64205 artfacts.net] ] Mass MOCA [ [http://www.massmoca.org massmoca.org] ] and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. [ [http://www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/exhibitionInfo/exhibition/78980 artfacts.net] ]

In 2003 she was nominated for the Beck's Futures awards at the ICA in London and her work attracted some controversy in the media. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/2984655.stm news.bbc.co.uk] ]

Since 2003 her work has shifted into an interest in legal language and systems of thought, with 'Disclaimer', an exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute [ [http://www.henry-moore-fdn.co.uk/matrix_engine/content.php?page_id=351 henry-moore-fdn.co.uk] ] examining the legal disclaimer as a form of negative space. In 2005 she showed 'Consideration', a series of works exploring the connections between contract law and performance art at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York as part of the PERFORMA05 Biennial. [ [http://05.performa-arts.org/about performa-arts.org] ] RoseLee Goldberg has described the works in this show as "dealing with the overwhelming power of the law." Young's work is included in the public collections of the Centre Pompidou, [ [http://www.centrepompidou.fr/Pompidou/Docs.nsf/Docs/ID24125893193A8805C1256DA300397E0C?OpenDocument&sessionM=4.2&L=2# centrepompidou.fr] ] Arts Council England, [ [http://www.artscouncilcollection.org.uk/main.html artscouncilcollection.org.uk] ] and the Tate.
