Jeremias van Rensselaer

Jeremias van Rensselaer

Jeremias van Rensselaer (bapt. 18 May 1632, Amsterdam - October 12, 1674, Crailo, Rensselaerwyck) was the third director of Rensselaerwyck, a patroonship in the Dutch Colony of New Netherland, now part of upstate New York in the United States.

He was the son of Kiliaen van Rensselaer and Anna van Wely. He succeeded his older brother Jan Baptiste van Rensselaer in 1656, who in turn had succeeded a cousin, Arent van Curler. His wife Maria was the sister of mayor of New York Stephanus van Cortlandt and a sister-in-law of Albany, New York Mayor Pieter Schuyler.

Jeremias first came to Rensselaerwyck in 1654, but returned to Holland for a year before returning to the estate. He died in what is now the City of Rensselaer in New York.

He and his children were the source of the many members of this family who have played an important role in New York. A great-great-grandson was General Peter Gansevoort.
