WKRR (92.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Classic rock format. The station's transmitter is in Randleman, North Carolina, which allows the station's signal to go as far south as the South Carolina line (the station can be heard in parts of Charlotte, to the southwest). The station's signal doesn't go very far north, as that would interfere with Roanoke, Virginia station K-92. The current morning show for Classic Rock 92 consists of Chris Kelly and Chris Demm, taking the name "Two Guys Named Chris". They signed on in January 1999, following the station's previous morning show, the syndicated "John Boy and Billy". Classic Rock 92 is owned by Dick Broadcasting, which also owns sister station WKZL-FM (107.5 megahertz), licensed to the city of Winston-Salem. Both stations broadcast from downtown Greensboro and have done so since the early 1990s.

History

In the late 1940s, WGWR-FM signed on in Asheboro as the sister FM to WKXR. Prior to 1984, the FM station played country music as WCSE [http://www.geocities.com/rdurw/wkrr.html, Retrieved on 2008/08/26.] .

WKRR was originally an album oriented rock (AOR) format station, which dates back to the early 1970s, but evolved to Classic Rock in the early 1990s. The current WKRR signed on the air (92.3FM) on December 31, 1985 after moving from Asheboro, where it was soft adult contemporary WRLT.

Morning Show personalities

*Weather Dave Aiken – Former local weatherman, now signs in at 7 a.m. to join the 2GNC morning show, which airs from 6 to 11 a.m., with "Best Of" segments airing from 5 to 6 a.m., and 11 a.m. to noon. Aiken is also the early afternoon disc jockey, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
*Chris Demm – One of the "Two Guys Named Chris"; Demm co-hosted the Rock 92 morning show with Brad Krantz in the early/mid 1990s, until the station became a syndicate for "John Boy & Billy's Big Show", at which time he did the local news & weather between breaks.
*Deidre James – Member of the "Two Guys Named Chris" morning show. She is known for her love of the Lifetime Television Network and Oprah Winfrey.
*Chris Kelly – Born Roman Kirkman, he is the other half of the "Two Guys Named Chris" on the eponymous Morning Show. Prior to joining Rock 92 in 1999, Kelly was part of the "Murphy In The Morning Show" on WKZL, which he also produced.

Characters

* Junior – The proprietor of the Pump & Munch in Montgomery County. Junior checks in each morning to give the latest updates on the Montgomery County Militia, and to report on the latest "Trouble at the Trailer" to explain why Spider won't be showing up at work today. Signs on by saying "This is Junior calling from Montgomery County, North 'By God' Carolina; Home of the Pump and Munch, asked for by name."

Former Characters

* Tony Montero – An obnoxious New Yorker that called in to gripe about the South. The Montero bit was killed after September 11, 2001, when north/south sentiments were obviously much less important and didn't need to be exacerbated.
* Mr. Manly – A now-defunct character that hasn't been heard from since the mid-90s. Mr. Manly offered tips on how to be a masculine gentleman, and would always sign off with, "Be Manly and Good Day."
* Earl Pitts – Not a Rock 92 original, but from the same era as Mr. Manly. This was (and still is on over 200 stations) a syndicated stereotypical redneck character that presented an editorial each morning that usually began with "Ya know what makes me sick?" Pitts would introduce himself as "Earl Pitts, American." Signature ending lines were "Wake Up, America!" and "I'm Earl Pitts, American. Pitts Off."

Bits, Stunts, & Contests

* Closest to the Pin AKA the Celebrity Birthday Game – Hosted by Chris Kelly, the game pits Demm, Biggie, Weather Dave, and an in-studio or phone-in guest against one another to guess celebrity ages. The participants get one point for each year that they are off, and the person with the lowest total at the end of the game wins. Sudden death format features dead celebrities.
* Put Up Or Shut Up – A quiz game featuring ten questions about music and/or rock and roll trivia. A caller is chosen to compete against Chris Demm, the "King of Rock & Roll Trivia". Fridays feature Bizarro Put Up or Shut Up in which the caller matches wits with Chris Kelly. The caller and the DJ both get the same ten questions and are quizzed separately with 60 seconds to answer. The winning prize for the caller is all of the money on Chris' person.
