Khirwar

Khirwar is a clan or "gotra" of Jats found in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh in India.

Origin

"Raja Khir" was the son of "Aniruddha", the grandson of Sri Krishna. Khirwars are the descendants of Raja Khir.

Geographical distribution

Uttar Pradesh

Khirwar Jats were the rulers of the Brij area of Uttar Pradesh. They still inhabit the village of "Pathauli" in the Agra district.

Punjab

Khirwars are found in the villages of "Khandu Shah", "Sangneki", "Sheron", "Usama", "Jhali", "Golbada" and "Manakpur" in the Tarn Taran district in the Majha region of Punjab.

Madhya Pradesh

Khirwars in Madhya Pradesh are known as "Khinwal". They are found in the Harda and Hoshangabad districts of Madhya Pradesh. In these areas, they were also awarded the title of ‘Bhonsale Bahadur’ by the Marathas.

The Khirwars occupied good land for cultivation on the banks of the Narmada. They founded the city of Narsinghpur in Madhya Pradesh where they ruled for a long period. The Khirwars of Narsinghpur were devotees of the Narasimha "Avatara" of Vishnu. At Narsinghpur, they constructed two temples to "Narasimha".
