Breaking the Silence (non-governmental organization)

Breaking The Silence ( _he. שוברים שתיקה "Shovrim Shtika") is an Israeli non-profit organization established by IDF soldiers and veterans who collect and provide testimonies about their own military service in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. The organization seeks to "break the silence" regarding the experiences of Israeli soldiers in the Palestinian territories, among them incidents of unnecessary violence and oppression committed by the Israeli military against Palestinian civilians many of which have gone unnoticed in Israeli and Western media. Most of the testimonies of veterans and active-duty IDF soldiers are reports of incidents that they personally have witnessed or committed. In addition to publishing written and videotaped reports on their website, members of the group have done speaking tours throughout Israel, western Europe and the United States. Some of the incidents reported by members of the movement have stirred public debates in Israel with respect to the implications of its ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories.

Yehuda Shaul is the executive director of Breaking The Silence.
