Gabrielino High School (GHS) is a public high school located on San Gabriel Boulevard in San Gabriel, California, serving grades 9-12. It was established in 1994, and is one of two high schools in the San Gabriel Unified School District. Del Mar High School (continuation) is the second. Gabrielino High School is a California Distinguished School, and is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). In addition, "Newsweek" magazine recently ranked Gabrielino as a top high school in the United States as determined by the number of Advanced Placement courses taken at the school in 2005 divided by the number of graduating seniors. In 2007, Gabrielino earned the Silver Medal status from the "U.S. News and World Report" based on standardized test performance in Math and English and AP courses taken and passed with a "3" or better. Based on this report, Gabrielino is placed in the top 3% of the nation or top 505 schools. About 39% of graduates go on to four-year universities nationwide while about 55% attend community college after graduation. The school has had many accomplishments for being a newly built high school.

The school completed its final phase of construction, which includes a baseball field. Gabrielino held its first home football game on the brand new field on September 8, 2005.

Architecture

Gabrielino High School's architecture is distinct, built using cosmopolitan trends and styles. The school's exterior uses bold colors, including shades of orange, red in its exterior. Although the school's physical size is small as compared to neighboring schools (e.g. San Gabriel High School, San Marino High School), the campus itself consists of buildings for administration, classrooms, a media center, gymnasium, and a theatre. Gabrielino High School's architecture is modern, and a recognizable feature of the school is its concrete clock tower and palm trees that line the school's entrance and its main outdoor area. The expanses of the school utilize bricks, rather than concrete, as flooring. The exterior of the school faces San Gabriel Boulevard and features metal trellises that support vines and flowering trees.

Student body

The student body consists of approximately 47% Asian, 38% Hispanic, 11% Caucasian, 3% Filipino, and 1% African-American. 29% of students are English learners, and 42% of students participate in free or reduced lunch programs. Approximately 38% of students meet the UC/CSU course requirements.

The school has the fourth largest Speech and Debate team (as of 12/21/07) in the United States registered with the National Forensic League. It has been one of the more successful teams in the Southern California Debate League.

Boys Basketball

The Gabrielino Boys Basketball teams have enjoyed consistent success in recent years, including several consecutive league championships (Mission Valley League) for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels.Though the Varsity team struggled in the 2007 season and did not make C.I.F. playoffs, the Junior Varsity squad was able to capture a fifth consecutive league championship going 10-0 for the second straight year.

Track and Field

Gabrielino established a Varsity Track and Field team in 2006. In 2007, Gabrielino's Track and Field team received "Most Improved" out of the whole Mission Valley League.

Swimming

The swim team has had tremendous success in the competitive Valle Vista league -- attaining the league title for 4 consecutive years ('04, '05, '06, '07) and on their way to a 5th capture in '08. GHS sends numerous swimmers to the C.I.F, or California Interscholastic Federation championships every year held in Long Beach, CA. The swim team is unique in the sense that the high school does not have their own pool facility. Instead, the team practices at nearby Smith Park.

Baseball

The Gabrielino Baseball team had stuggled for many years until, in 2007, they won the Mission Valley League title for the 1st time in school history against league rival Arroyo High School. They finished with a 12-3 record in league in 2007. The last time Gabrielino made it to the C.I.F playoffs was in the year 2000 finishing 2nd with a 9-6 record in league that year.
