Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is located near Fish Camp, California, U.S., in the Sierra National Forest. Built in the 1960s by Rudy Stauffer, the YMSPRR largely follows right-of-way established by the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company. Service began with the purchase of three-truck Shay locomotive #10 from the West Side Lumber Company railway of Tuolumne. Built in 1928, #10 was reportedly the largest and among the last narrow-gauge Shay locomotives ever constructed.

After his retirement in 1981, Rudy Stauffer was succeeded by his son, Max, as the railroad's owner. In 1986, Max Stauffer, who continues to operate the railroad, purchased Shay #15 from the West Side & Cherry Valley Railway. The three-truck, 1913 Shay was one of two built to serve the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company and acquired second-hand by the West Side Lumber Company, where #15 and sister #14 spent the remainder of their working career.

The two Shays operate daily during the summer months while the railroad's Model A "Jenny" railcars, capable of carrying about a dozen passengers, typically handle operations during the off-season.

The Thornberry Museum is a historic log cabin decorated for life at the turn of the century.
