Hornchurch was a local government district in south west Essex from 1926 to 1965. The urban district council was based at Langtons House.

History

It was created an urban district in 1926 out the Hornchurch parish which was removed from Romford Rural District. In 1934 the rural district was abolished and the urban district gained more of its former area including Upminster, Cranham, Rainham and North Ockendon. The urban district council unsuccessfully petitioned for incorporation as a municipal borough on 20 May 1955. The council operated Queen's Theatre [Havering London Borough Council - [http://www.havering.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=4597 Heritage strategy for Hornchurch] ] and constructed Hornchurch Stadium in Upminster. [A History of the County of Essex: Volume 7, [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=42811 "Hornchurch: Economic history and local government"] ]

The Royal Commission on Local Government in Greater London considered the district for inclusion in Greater London and in 1965 Hornchurch Urban District was abolished by the London Government Act 1963. Its former area was transferred to Greater London from Essex and was combined with that of the Municipal Borough of Romford to form the present-day London Borough of Havering.

Population

The rapid expansion of the population came about from the new industries developing in Essex, and Londoners moving to the new estates of houses that were built with them."The East End" Alan Palmer, (John Murray, London 1989)]
