- João Rodrigues (missionary)
João Rodrigues (1561–1634, or perhaps 1558–1633) was a Portuguese member of the Society of Jesus (a Jesuit) who carried out missionary work in Japan. [web cite|url=http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13109c.htm|title=Joao Rodriguez|work=Catholic Encyclopedia] He wrote several books, including in 1603 a Japanese–Portuguese dictionary entitled "Vocabvlario da Lingoa de Iapam" and in 1604 a Japanese grammar entitled "Arte da lingoa de Iapam" (archaic Portuguese; in Japanese: 日本大文典, "Nihon-dai bunten"; in English, "Art of the Language of Japan").
In Popular Culture
The character of Martin Alvito in the James Clavell book Shōgun and the adapted TV miniseries Shogun is loosely based on Rodrigues. He was portrayed in the miniseries by Damien Thomas.
