Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton, 3rd Baronet

Sir Robert John Wilmot-Horton, 3rd Baronet, GCH (21 December 1784 – 31 May 1841) was a British politician during the first third of the 19th century. He was a member of the Canningite faction of the Tory party and served as Member of Parliament for Newcastle-under-Lyme from 1818 until 1830.

Wilmot-Horton educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, he served as the Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1821 to 1827, became a Privy Councillor in 1827, and served as Governor of Ceylon from 1831 to 1837.

He was born Robert John Wilmot, son of the second Wilmot Baronet of Osmaston, near Derby. In 1806 he married Anne Beatrix Horton, heiress of the Catton Hall estate in Derbyshire. In 1823 he inherited that estate on the death of his father in law and pursuant to the latter's will added Horton as a second surname.

Wilmot-Horton was knighted by William IV in 1831. He succeeded to the Baronetcy of Osmaston thus being titled Baronet Wilmot-Horton of Osmaston in 1834.
