The Boggart

The Boggart

"The Boggart" is a children's novel by Susan Cooper published in 1993 by Macmillan. The book was nominated for a Young Reader's Choice Award (Grade 4-8) in 1996.

It tells the tale of a family from Canada, the Volniks, who inherit a castle in Scotland. They soon discover that together with the castle they also seem to have inherited a mischievous spirit, a boggart.

Plot Summary

When Emily and Jessup Volnik find out that their father has inherited Castle Keep, they travel from their home in Canada to Scotland. After a short stay, they decide not to keep the castle. Emily and Jessup each get one piece of furniture. Emily picks a rolltop desk, in which the Boggart, a mischief, joke-playing creature, is in. As a result, he is shipped to Canada, where he discovers a new world. However, when he becomes homesick, Emily and Jessup try to find a way to ship him home. She is determined to help him.

Characters

Emily Volnik is 12 years old, and one of the main characters. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and believes that Jessup is a pest. Originally, Emily is believed to be the cause of the boggart's jokes, of which one caused her to break a leg and crack a rib. She is the first to find out about the Boggart.

Jessup Volnik is said to have the IQ of a genius at only 10 years old. He has brown hair and brown eyes, unlike his older sister. Most of his time is consumed on the computer, mostly on his own game, "Black Hole". Jessup also plays ice hockey

Tommy Cameron lives with his mom and dad above their shop in Scotland. He knew the MacDevon (the owner of Castle Keep) and was very sad at his death. Black haired, blue eyed Tommy also knew about the Boggart, and sent Emily and Jessup a few postcards after they left Scotland and Castle Keep.

Film, TV or theatrical adaptations
