USS Phoenix

USS Phoenix

Six United States Navy ships have borne the name "Phoenix", the first three for the phoenix, a mythical bird of ancient Greece that consumes itself in fire, only to rise again rejuvenated from its ashes, and the later three for the capital of Arizona.

* The first "Phoenix" was a packet purchased by the Continental Navy in 1778.
* The second USS|Phoenix|1841|2 was a 90-ton schooner of two guns built in 1841.
* The third USS|Phoenix|1861|2 was a 404-ton ship purchased by the Navy on 1861 for the Stone Fleet. This was a former whaling vessel, also named the "Phoenix"
* The fourth USS|Phoenix|CL-46|3 was a "Brooklyn"-class light cruiser that served in World War II, and later, having been sold to Argentina, the General Belgrano, which was sunk in the Falklands War.
* The fifth USNS|Phoenix|AG-172|3 was laid down as "Capital Victory" (MCV–183) in 1945, then renamed "Arizona" in 1948, then renamed "Phoenix" and classified AG–172 in 1962.
* The sixth USS|Phoenix|SSN-702|3 was a "Los Angeles"-class nuclear attack submarine commissioned in 1981.

Additionally, the "Nebula"-class USS "Phoenix" appears in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Wounded"
