Marvin Young (born May 10 1967) better known by his stage name Young MC is an American rapper. He is best known for his 1989 hit "Bust a Move".

Biography

Early life

Young was born Marvin Young in South Wimbledon, London, England but raised in Queens. After graduating from Hunter College High School in New York City, he moved to California to attend the University of Southern California. He graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in economics, which he received before "Stone Cold Rhymin"' completed production.

Music career

In 1989, Young rose to prominence with his hit "Bust a Move", from his debut album "Stone Cold Rhymin'", which won the second (and last ever) Grammy Award for "Best Rap Recording" at the 1990 Grammy Awards, during the golden age of hip hop.Fact|date=June 2008 The bass line was provided by Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame, with backing vocals sung by Stevie Wonder's studio background vocalist Crystal Blake.Fact|date=June 2008 The breakdown came from a sampling of Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band's "Scorpio".Fact|date=June 2008 Originally recorded on the Delicious Vinyl record label, it was re-issued by Rhino Records.Fact|date=June 2008

In addition to producing the hit "Bust a Move", Young MC was also an accomplished songwriter, having co-written the hits "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" for Tone Loc. Due to creative differences, Young left Delicious Vinyl and signed with Capitol Records, which released Young's follow-up album, "Brainstorm". Young was briefly featured on the 2002 VH1 program "100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders". Also in 2002, he appeared on the hip hop edition of The Weakest Link, of which he was the winner.

Young returned to the spotlight in 2006 by appearing on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" 3.Young currently lives in Arizona and is still performing. "Bust A Move" has been used numerous times in commercials and films, as well as being a popular track in health club rotations.
