Sattur is a small town and a municipality in Virudhunagar district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The district has 8 taluks, namely Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur, Tiruchuli and Virudhunagar.

The town is located in the bank of Vaippar river. Sattur taluk has contents of black soil around the town, suitable for crop cultivation. The town lies in NH7 and has very good road and railway connectivity.

Geography

Sattur is located at coord|9.37|N|77.93|E|. Has good amenities such as banks, railway station, police station, government hospital, post office, ATM, Schools, College, Bus station, etc.

Shiva and Vishnu temples in Sattur find histiorical mention. Around Sattur, Irukangudi and Oodaipatti have temples of Mariamman and Vinayagar respectively.

Sattur elects one MLA to the legislative assembly of the State.

Demographics

As of 2006 India census, [GR|India] Sattur had a population of 56,274. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Sattur has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 69%. In Sattur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Sattur is one of the towns where early Nadar community migrants from South Tamilnadu settled down while settling in so many other villages such as Chennampatti, Vilaampatti, Virudhupatti, Thiruthangal, Muhavoor, Kovilpatti, Kadambur Pattiveeranpatti, Palayampatti, Sathangudi, Sholavandhan, Saalichandhai, Bodi and formed uravinmurais which resulted in formation nadar community run schools and mariamman/kaliamman temples in these villages & towns.

Industries

Sattur is well-known as a fountain-pen nib manufacturing centre. It is probably the only place in India that continues to this date, in this line of business as a cottage industry. Other small scale cottage units like printing presses, fireworks are also present, scattered around the town.

A fairly large part of the population is involved in Matchstick manufacturing industry. Also, there are timber depots and raw material suppliers exclusively for the safety match and firework sectors in this area.

Match-stick frames (a collection of wood-strips to hold individual match sticks), Racks (stacks holding individual frames), and various other items for match factories continue to be supplied locally as also to various other parts of Tamil Nadu. Log-wood, another raw material for these industry, is procured from other nearby towns such as Tenkasi, Nagercoil and the neighboring state Kerala.

A type of chillies grown in Sattur called Sattur Sanam s4 is one of two chilly varieties produced in Tamil Nadu. The Ramnad Mundu, a type of light bathe towel, is produced here.

Transport

The town is well-connected with neighboring villages by road and rail. The nearest airport is Madurai and nearest sea port is Toothukudi. The National Highway, NH7 runs close to the town.

The town has temples of Shiva, Krishna and Bhadra Kali Amman.

Education

Sattur has several schools and a college: the Ramaswamy Naidu Memorial College. S.R.N.M.College has been a popular for education to a lot of middle class students. It is known for accommodating students from poor families. This town has fairly well laid out sports facilities which produced notable sports persons.
