Singapore International School (SIS) is an elementary and secondary (up to Form Two) school situated at Nam Long Shan (Brick Hill), Aberdeen, Hong Kong.

It is an international school run by the government of Singapore and follows the Singaporean currriculum. The school was first established in September 1991 in Kennedy Town with an enrolment of 200 students. The school now has about 1000 students from some 15 nationalities, with the majority being Singaporeans and Hongkongers.

Location

In 1995, it moved to its current premises on Nam Long Shan near Aberdeen, occupying an area of 4,150 square metres. The land was granted by the Hong Kong Government while the cost of the building was borne by the Singapore government.

Curriculum

SIS provides a bilingual education in English and Chinese (Mandarin). It follows the Singapore primary and secondary curriculum with English as the core subject. Other subjects include moral education, dance and French. At the end of Primary 6, students going to Singapore to continue their education take the Singapore Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). Students staying in SIS or elsewhere in Hong Kong for secondary school need not take the PSLE. SIS also conducts a two-year preparatory programme for children aged 4 years - 6 years.

econdary curriculum

The school currently has 3 secondary one classes and 2 secondary two classes. In 2009/10 there will be a secondary 3 section and in 2010/11 there will be a secondary 4 section. The Singaporean government has also given the green light for a pre-university section.

Before SIS had a secondary class, its students had to go elsewhere to continue their education, usually back to Singapore (as many were citizens) or onto other international schools in Hong Kong, such as Chinese International School.

Extra-curricular activities

SIS celebrated its 15th anniversary on 28 April 2006, with an original musical performance entitled "Reaching out, Touching Lives" involving every pupil in the school. It was performed at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and was a smash hit.
