Maine. One day her aunts send for Rebecca's older sister, Hannah, to go live with the aunts in Riverboro. Rebecca's aunts are old and need help doing daily activities. Rebecca's mother cannot spare Hannah, so she sends Rebecca instead.
Upon arrival, Rebbeca learns that her Aunt Jane is sweet and kind and that her Aunt Miranda is much stricter. In Riverboro Rebecca learns to sew, cook and do many household chores. She goes to school and meets Emma Jane, who becomes her best friend.
Rebecca completes high school in Riverboro and enjoys living with her aunts. However, she never feels she has her Aunt Miranda's respect.
