Barvas

Barvas

Barvas (Scottish Gaelic: "Barabhas") is a place in the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.

It developed around a road junction. North is the road to Ness; west takes the traveller to Carloway and the West Side; south runs the road to Stornoway. It is known as being the location of the highest concentration of Scottish Gaelic speakers in Scotland (74.7% of the population).

In the early 2000s, controversy hit the area as Europe's largest windfarm was planned for Barvas Moor. The Scottish Government rejected the proposals in early 2008 [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/highlands_and_islands/7208991.stm BBC NEWS | UK | Scotland | Highlands and Islands | Massive wind farm 'turned down' ] ]
