Kolkata has several parallel systems ofeducation :* The
West Bengal governmental system of education, known asWest Bengal Board of Secondary Education andWest Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education , Kolkata.
* Private Church-run schools administered by either the CNI orCatholic or other non Christian schools administered privately. They are affiliated mostly to theICSE andISC examination of theCouncil for the Indian School Certificate Examinations , Delhi.
* Central government administered schools, such asKendriya Vidyalaya , and privately administered schools affiliated mostly to theCentral Board of Secondary Education , Delhi.
* The LondonEdexcel / theIGCSE education system.
* TheIslamic Madrasah system of education.
* The open school based education affiliated to theNational Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Delhi.
* In addition to that, private candidates can appear for examinations of either theCBSE , West Bengal Board and other state boards which conduct their courses in the city.Non-privileged children mainly attend government primary schools, if they attend school at all. The quality of education available in these schools is not, by world standards, good. There have been recent initiatives, such as
