The New York State Portal
New York (
/njuːˈjɔrk/) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. New York City and Long Island are located on the south eastern most part of lower New York State.New York is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; it shares a water border with Rhode Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario. New York is the United States' third most populous state.
The Algonquian, Iroquois, and Lenape Native American groups inhabited New York when Dutch and French nationals moved into the region in the early 17th century. First claimed by Henry Hudson in 1609, the region came to have Dutch forts in Fort Orange by 1614, near the site of the present-day state capital, Albany. The state was colonized by the Dutch in 1624, at both Albany and Manhattan; it later fell to British annexation in 1664. About one third of all of the battles of the Revolutionary War took place in New York. It became an independent state on July 9, 1776 and enacted its constitution in 1777. The state ratified the United States Constitution on July 26, 1788 to become the 11th state. According to the United States Department of Commerce, New York is the state of choice for foreign visitors, leading Florida and California in tourism.

Harlem is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, long known as a major African-American cultural and business center. After being associated for much of the twentieth century with crime and poverty, it is now experiencing social and economic gentrification.
Harlem stretches from the East River to the Hudson River between 155th Street—where it meets Washington Heights—to a ragged border along the south. Central Harlem begins at 110th Street, at the northern boundary of Central Park; Spanish Harlem extends east Harlem's boundaries south to 96th Street, while in the west it begins north of Upper West Side, which gives an irregular border west of Morningside Avenue. Harlem's boundaries have changed over the years; as Ralph Ellison observed: "Wherever Negroes live uptown is considered Harlem." The first European settlement in what is now Harlem was by Hendrick de Forest and Dutch settlers in 1637.

The NYPD is considered to be one of the first "modern" style police departments in the United States along with the Boston Police Department.

Selected biography
Ralph Bakshi (born October 29, 1938) is an American director of animated and occasionally live-action films. As the American animation industry fell into decline during the 1960s and 1970s, Bakshi tried to bring change to the industry as a pioneer of adult animation. Bakshi started his career as a cel polisher at the Terrytoons studio, working his way up from cel painter to inker, then animator, and eventually began to direct animated television shows for the studio. Bakshi moved to Famous Studios in 1967, before starting his own studio in 1968. Through developing a work relationship with producer Steve Krantz, Bakshi made his debut feature film, Fritz the Cat in 1972, the first animated film to receive an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. The film was followed by Heavy Traffic and Coonskin. All three films were extremely controversial for their content and approach to animation. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Bakshi became a spokesperson for a new direction in animation with American Pop and the fantasy films Wizards; Fire and Ice, with fantasy painter Frank Frazetta; and the first film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, a film that laid the groundwork for future adaptations of the book.
