Biography

Juantorena was born in Santiago de Cuba.

He debuted in the Cuban first series aged 12, in the Orientales de Santiego. He remained in Cuba for seven years, before moving to Russian side Ural Ufa. In the meantime he also began to play for Cuba's national team, winning the bronze medal in the 2005 World League and scoring a total 75 caps.

In the late 2006 Juantorena was disqualified for two years after an accusation of doping. His return was delayed by the Cuban Volleyball Federation due to his decision to move to play to Italy. He remained in Trento until he could return to play in 2009. Playing for Trentino Volley, he won the FIVB Club World Championship, the Italian Cup and a European Champions League (he also obtained the title of MVP in the competition) in 2010.

In May 2010 he played for a short loan in Qatar. He returned to Trentino Volley in September 2010.
