Orono High School has been praised on numerous occasions for its academic excellence. Orono High School students generally test very high on standardized tests[1].
Sports
Fall Sports
Orono High School has long been known for its sports teams. In the fall the school offers football, field hockey, golf, soccer, and cross country. The school has had a fairly successful history in all of these sports. In 1932 the football team went undefeated and underscored upon.[2] The Cross Country team both boys and girls won the 2009 Eastern Maine Class C championship. In 2008 and 2009 the girls soccer team won the Eastern Maine Class C Championship.
Winter Sports
In the winter Orono High School offers swimming, indoor track and field, wrestling, cheerleading, hockey,and basketball. In 2007, Orono added nordic skiing as its sixth winter sport. It has since grown to become popular and successful. In 2010, the Orono Boy's nordic team captured fourth place in the state competition, a position higher than any other Orono winter sports team. The Orono High School Hockey team has a long standing tradition of honor and pride.

In the spring Orono High School offers baseball, track and field, and tennis.
Activities
AFS AT ORONO HIGH SCHOOL (Advisor, Deta Pearce) Orono High School has one of the oldest continuing AFS Exchange Programs in Maine and is recognized as a leader in New England. Since 1964 OHS has hosted over 130 students from around the world. Many of our students have also taken the opportunity to study in a foreign country for a year, a semester or a summer. Exchange students enrich our school by providing an inter?cultural dimension and new perspectives.
ALL AROUND THE WORLD (Mme Hubbard and Sra Crocker) Language Tables are held once a week in library during lunches. Alternating trips abroad to France and Spain. Orono’s annual Spanish Immersion offers an opportunity for area high school students to use their language in authentic situations.
ART CLUB (Advisor, Jessica Barnes) Art club is for the artist in every student. You do not need to be in art class to join in the fun! We do different projects all the time, so join for the year or join when the project interests you. This club is for the beginner as well as the experienced. We incorporate a wide variety of projects in to the year that fit the interests of all students. A sampling of projects we do include: mosaics, drawing lessons, screen printing, bead making, jewelry design, painting etc.
CHESS CLUB (Coach, Steve Abrahams) This team participates in local and national chess competitions. During the 2008 season Orono had the first girl to win the High School State Chess Tournament since 1988 and another girl win The All Girls Chess. We also had a boy win the under 1200 Team. All student are welcome and encouraged to join this great team.
CLUB FRANÇAIS (Advisor, Madame Hubbard) Orono High School’s Club Français offers students opportunities to explore the cultural side of France and the Francophonie in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Activities range from watching French movies to cooking French foods to playing games (Taboo, Pictionary, Banagrams, Voyage en France, Mille Bornes, to name just a few). Past field trips have taken us to museums throughout the state to study French artists, to French plays presented bilingually, even to weekends in Montreal and Quebec City to experience francophone culture first? hand. The club meets generally once a week after school and is open to any student interested in learning more about French culture, whether or not s/he is currently enrolled in a French class.
THE SPANISH CLUB (Advisor, Señora Crocker) Spanish Club is a forum in which students can practice what they have learned in their Spanish classes. It allows the students to delve into the Spanish culture in a way that we do not have time to do in our language classes. The club is run by the students and it is as active as the students want it to be. We sing, dance, cook, take trips to Canada, watch movies and much more.
DRAMA (Advisor, Chris Luthin) The drama program at OHS produces three plays annually. A major musical production is performed in the fall. Joining more than fifty high school students are community members and students from Orono Middle School, Asa Adams Elementary and Veazie Community School. Past productions include Gypsy, The Sound of Music, and Grease. In the winter, a one?act play is rehearsed for inclusion in the Maine State Drama Festival. Last year the OHS entry, A David Ives Triptych, was selected to represent the region at the State Drama Festival in Cape Elizabeth. A full?length play is mounted in late spring. Recent performances include Henry by Thomas Kilroy, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer.
GOACTIVE! (Advisor, Jeff Owen) GoActive! is an outdoor athletic competition club highlighting life?long outdoor sports and activities. This club is ideal for:
• People who love being active in the outdoors.• People who want to become stronger and more fit through participation in rigorous outdoor activities. • Competitive athletes who are not interested in traditional school sports. • Varsity and Junior Varsity athletes who are in off?seasons. Thinking about winter got you down? Try snowshoe racing and back?country skiing. Mud season? Whitewater racing! Or try woods and mountain running, orienteering, mountain biking, and hiking. Got the idea? This club is all about being fit and healthy, strong and competitive, and happy in the outdoors.
THE INSIDE (Advisor, Ms. Moriaty) New year. News paper. The Inside is Orono High School's newspaper of record. You'll find feature articles on military recruitment in high schools and the recent U.S. elections. Look for award?winning poetry; music and movie reviews. Inside boasts photos you'll find nowhere else. Students write every word of The Inside. They edit and produce the paper. Write the headlines. Select the artwork. And get the paper out. Backing them up are the English teachers, some extremely resourceful parents, and Orono High School's outstanding librarian.
