Background

Superficial was three years in the making.[1] It features contributions from songwriters including Cathy Dennis and Kool Kojak. The album was self-funded and cost almost $2 million to record.[2][3] Montag revealed that she was working on an album in February 2007,[4] and in August, Ryan Seacrest premiered "Body Language" as her debut single on his KIIS-FM radio show. The song featured a rap by Montag's boyfriend, Spencer Pratt, but Montag and Pratt were quick to deny that the song was her first single.[5] She was also reported to have worked with producer David Foster for the album, with one of their collaborations "Touch Me" leaking in December.[6] Montag released the promo single, "Higher" along with an accompanying video shot by Pratt to iTunes on February 5, 2008. The song and the video immediately elicted a negative response from the online community.[7] Two weeks later, "No More" was leaked online, forcing Montag to release it as a promotional single as well the following month.[8] Two more songs, "Fashion"[9] and "One More Drink" appeared on the internet in June 2008.[10] These were followed by another promo single, "Overdosin'"[11] leak, "Party is Wherever I Am".[12] Another song, "More Is More", had debuted at number fifty on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in June 2009, and peaked at number twenty-seven.[13] "Blackout" was co-written by Taylor Momsen, who claimed to have written the song when she was eight.[14]

Music structure

The album is of the dance-pop genre, incorporating elements of electro in its production and beats.First track, "Look How I'm Doing" is a kiss-off to a former flame, while "Blackout" is an ode to her husband, Spencer Pratt.[15][3] Montag described the final produce, Superficial to People as "a fun, empowering mix that you could really dance to,"[1] elaborating to PopEater that she felt that "[there was] so much darkness in the world right now, I just wanted to bring some light and some fun into it."[3]

Promotion and release

Montag promoted the album by performing "Body Language" at 2009 edition of Miss Universe during the fashion shoot presentation.[16][17] The song however, was not included on the album. Two extended plays, Wherever I Am and Here She Is... were released to digital download outlets to promote the album before its release. Superficial was released on January 11, 2010[1] after numerous pushbacks from 2007 and sold fewer than 1,000 copies in its first week of release.[18]
