An oncocyte is an epithelial cell characterized by an excessive amount of mitochondria, resulting in an abundant acidophilic, granular cytoplasm. Oncocytes can be benign or can undergo malignant transformation.

Derived from the Greek root onco-, which means mass, bulk.
