On-Ramp Wireless is a systems provider for low-power wide area scalable sensor networking and location tracking. The company’s Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP) solution is a wireless system purpose-built to solve the challenges of device monitoring, the Smart Grid and asset tracking in metro-scale and other difficult radio propagation environments.[1]

Applications include Industrial Sensor Networking, AMR/AMI, Building Control, Remote Monitoring, Energy Management, and real-time location tracking using the free 2.4 GHz ISM bands. On-Ramp’s hardware has been tested at over an 30 mile range in the 2.4 GHz free ISM band while maintaining low power operation. It is optimized for robustness, range and capacity.[2] [3]

On September 1, 2010, the World Economic Forum announced the company as a Technology Pioneer for 2011.[4] On April 4, 2011, Bloomberg announced the company as a 2011 New Energy Pioneer.[5]

On-Ramp is a founding member of and actively working within the IEEE 802.15.4k standards task group, which specifies the physical layer and media access control for Low-Energy Critical Infrastructure Monitoring (LECIM).[6]

On-Ramp is headquartered in San Diego, California.

Contents

Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP)

On-Ramp’s Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP) communication system provides connectivity for a number of device monitoring applications, such as Smart Grid, including Smart Metering, water distribution systems, environmental monitoring, and energy-optimizing infrastructure systems. The ULP was created as an alternative to the current cellular and wireless mesh systems used within the Smart Grid and industrial automation applications today.[7]

Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP) System Release 1.2

The Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP) System Release 1.2 is a global device monitoring system uniquely developed for Smart Grid and other low power, critical infrastructure monitoring applications. A development of On-Ramp’s ULP wireless system, the ULP System Release 1.2 delivers expanded features including the enabling of secure, wide-area, low-cost coverage and capacity, even for hard-to-reach powered or battery-operated meters and sensors connecting to utility and other industrial applications.[8]

Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU)

The Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU) is a certified Smart Grid and infrastructure-monitoring device to monitor the activity of power lines and grid assets. In its first application deployment, the RMU provides specific functionality for monitoring and automatic alarm notification of solar-powered and line-power obstruction warning lights in electric transmission towers, cellular towers and other obstacles.[9]
