Oak (Flavoured Milk)

Oak (Flavoured Milk)

The OAK brand first emerged in 1903 in Hexham, NSW. It was known as the Hunter Valley milk brand and made its name as a flavoured milk brand in 1967, becoming synonymous with milkshakes and milk bars. The brand was launched into Queensland, South Australia and Victoria in 1998 - deleted in Victoria by 2007 and relaunched in 2010. Unlike other flavoured milk brands, OAK has stayed true to its milkshake heritage, by continuing to use full cream milk in its core products.

The OAK brand has also stretched across a range of dairy foods in its time, such as ice cream, cottage cheese, butter, custard, cream and frozen yoghurt.

Ownership

The OAK brand is now owned by Parmalat - a mulitnational Italian dairy and food corporation. Parmalat acquired the OAK brand from Dairy Farmers in July 2009 – six months after Dairy Farmers was bought by National Foods.[2]

Oak Milk Bars

Several OAK Milk bars have operated in the Hunter region for many years. These include bars in Newcastle, Hexham, Peats Ridge[3] and Freemans Waterhole. Originally, many of the milk bars were mapped out down the main route north from Sydney and became favourite spots to break up the journey. Heavy traffic became a problem, especially at holiday times, and the F3 Expressway was opened in 1988-90.

Communications

The brand has gained popularity over the years with campaigns like “A Soft Drink it Ain’t”, “Totally Satisfilling” and most recently “Kill Hungrythirsty Dead” where a new need state – Hungrythirsty - has been identified.[4] The “Kill Hungrythirsty Dead” campaign features Australian actor, David Field.
