Nuclear energy in Malaysia

Although Malaysia has established Nuclear Agency and been actively involved in the periodic review of the nuclear option, currently there is no nuclear power generation plant neither is there a plan to embark on a nuclear power program in the foreseeable future.^{[1][dead link]}

Malaysia is considering to build nuclear power plants to support the growing needs of energy in congested areas. The Government of Malaysia did call for representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to begin research on building the power plant. The people of Malaysia was suddenly worried by nuclear power plants after what has unfold in Japan when Fukushima I Power Plant had a nuclear meltdown. The government however, did not halt the research. Former Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad expressed discouragement on the idea of Malaysia relying on nuclear power for energy because of the unpredictability of nuclear power. He also said that nuclear power was never an option when Malaysia was under his premiership. However, according to researchers, nuclear power probably is the best choice to aid Malaysia in obtaining low cost, long lasting power source in line with the nation's plan to become a developed country by the year 2020.
