It is a part of North Kosovo, a region with an ethnic Serb majority that functions largely autonomously from the remainder of the ethnic-Albanian-majority Kosovo and acts as the region's capital. It covers 1/5 of Kosovska Mitrovica and has a population of over 22,000 people of whom 19,000 are Serbians, 2,000 Albanians and 1,000 other minorities.[1]
North Kosovska Mitrovica currently represents one of the most important political, educational and health centers for Serbians in Kosovo. It is the only urban area in Kosovo where Serbs are the ethnic majority. In the city the University of Pristina is located, which is under war circumstances relocated from Pristina to Mitrovica and which is the only University where Serbs and other Slavic speakers are able to attend schooling in Kosovo. Also, there is a Clinical Center, which is the only safe health center for Serbs in Kosovo.[2]
In the future, North Kosovska Mitrovica might receive the status of a separate municipality which would be administratively divided from South Mitrovica and have its own mayor and local government. This alternative has come to be supported by the international community and the Albanian politicians while Serbs are still considering this option.[3]

Culture and education
Serbian faculties of the University of Pristina were relocated from Pristina to Kosovska Mitrovica after the Kosovo War.
Kosovo Rampage
During the Kosovo Rampage of 2004, when Albanians attacked Serbs, burning and destroying their homes, many Serbs from central Kosovo and other parts of the province found shelter and refuge in North Kosovo. This part of the city as the entire North Kosovo is under protection of the French KFOR Battalion.
