Literary career

Fowler's debut novel, A Thing (or Two) About Curtis and Camilla,[1] was published in 2002 by Pantheon/Random House.[2] For this manuscript Fowler received the largest advance given to a previously unpublished author (The Tallahassee Democrat). The novel was called by The Los Angeles Times “a smash” that “resonates like a perfect pop song.” The Tallahassee Democrat wrote that "few novels, let alone first ones, deliver...wisdom with as much talent, humor, and emotional force. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird comes to mind." [3] Time Out London called the book "an inventive, deliriously funny first novel" full of "genius observations.” The novel received praise from Big City Lit,[4] Publishers Weekly, [5] and Book Slut.[6] Fowler's other prose has appeared in The Encyclopedia of Exes (Three Rivers/Random House),[7] The Antioch Review, New York University’s literary journal Epiphany, the Berlin-based Pulse,[8] and online fiction journals Vice-Versa[9] and Yellow.[citation needed]

Fowler's poetry has been published in The TriBeca Review, and his journalism in GQ, POZ,[10] Metal Edge, Movie Mirror, and Teen Beat. He has taught fiction writing at New York University, mediabistro[11] and The New School.[12] He is at work on his second novel, Your Children Shall Be Kings.

Musical career

At Cornell University Fowler fronted the rock bands Proven Guilty and Sorry 'Bout Your Daughter. After moving to New York City Fowler partnered with guitarist and producer Gregg Wattenberg. Hollywood producer Sandy Gallin secured the team a worldwide recording contract with Victory/Polygram Records.[13] Director Paul Boyd shot the music video for their first radio single "Miles Away."[14] Ric Wake produced their debut LP. Fowler and Wattenberg performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and toured in support of major recording acts. Fowler and Wattenberg composed music for and acted in "A Hit is a Hit," the tenth episode of the HBO original series The Sopranos.[15]

In 1999 Fowler founded the hard rock band MOTHER with guitarist Arthur Lynn aka A.L.L. and drummer Keith Carlock (John Mayer, Steely Dan, Sting). MOTHER’s self-titled debut album was signed by Al Teller to Atomic Pop Records, the world's first[not in citation given] internet recording label.[16]

MOTHER placed music in the Sony Pictures production "Mercy." Fowler's songs have also appeared in television series, such as "You Don't Remember," featured in 2010 on The CW Network’s 90210. Fowler's southern rock ballad "Splinter" is featured in the 2010 motion picture Undocumented.

In January 2010 Fowler formed the pomp rock band Maximilian Is King with A.L.L. and keyboardist Rob Clores. Their Music For The Fire EP was mixed by Steve Thompson, and placed on rotation in DJ Rich Russo's AnythingAnything program at WRXP 101.9, New York City's largest rock radio station. Maximilian Is King's debut full-length, Songs To Kill Yourself With, was produced by A.L.L. with drum programming by Carlos Alomar. The album was mixed with additional production by producer Roy Thomas Baker.
