Background
New Bridge Middle School is located in downtown Jacksonville, NC. It is one of two of Onslow County’s magnet schools (the other being Clyde Erwin Elementary School. [6] New Bridge is Onslow’s only magnet middle school. The school building was closed for the 1997-98 school year for remodeling. The doors reopened in the fall of 1998 as New Bridge Magnet school for math, science and technology.
As with the areas other middle schools, New Bridge serve students in grades 6, 7 and 8. According to school leaders, three characteristics set NBMS apart from other schools. Those characteristics are: 1) differentiated and integrated lessons; 2) technology integration; and 3) highly motivated students and teacher. Since opening, New Bridge Middle’s testing profile has demonstrated high academic gains for students.[7] [8]
Characteristics of the School
The two story building that currently houses New Bridge began as Jacksonville Senior High School in 1941, years prior to the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision by the US Supreme Court that required desegregation [9] and decades before actual racial integration in eastern North Carolina. Jacksonville Senior High School housed white students in the Jacksonville, NC area nearby Georgetown housed their back counterparts. Both schools were located in downtown Jacksonville, just blocks from both the Jacksonville City Hall and the Onslow County Courthouse. The location of Georgetown and Jacksonville Senior was central to the populations of that time. In the 1960s, Jacksonville Senior High School moved to its current location on Henderson Blvd. and the building on New Bridge Street became Jacksonville Junior High School and later Jacksonville Middle School. New Bridge was opened with the purpose of reducing overcrowded conditions in other area middle schools.
Student Population
Students historically gained admission to New Bridge only through a lottery process. The lottery process involves the use of a computer program that randomly selects students who have applied. In order to attend, students and parents must agree to support the school’s expectations of high achievement and the uniform dress code.
New Bridge Middle School has students coming from all of Onslow County’s 19 elementary schools and, after the completion of 8th grade, students matriculating to all 7 high schools. From 1998 to 2010, the transportation department provided door-to-door bus service in a manner similar to all other school. This created a long bus rides for students. Beginning in 2010, transportation services stopped door-to-door bus service. The school now uses a hub bus system in which parents transport their children to one of several hubs (i.e. Swansboro Middle School). Bus service is then provided from the hub to the school (and vice versa in the afternoon). Also, students may now attend who live in the "home district," that is, the area nearest the school.
Leadership
New Bridge Middle School has been served by three principals. The school opened in 1998 under Mrs. Gail Normanly. Former NBMS teacher Brent Anderson became the next principal in 2003. Dr. Christopher Barnes became the school's third principal in 2009.

Achievement Performance
AYP Targets
North Carolina targets for both reading and math increased from 2009-10 to 2010-11 (reading target increased from 43.2% to 71.6%; math target increased from 77.2% to 88.6%). NBMS met 21 of 25 new AYP (NCLB) Targets. The number of AYP subgroups increased from 2009-10 to 2010-11. With the overall tested population moving from 478 to 496, several subgroup populations also increased. All reading targets were met with the exception of “Students with Disabilities” (50.0%). Three AYP deficits exist for mathematics (“Students with Disabilities”- 65.2%; “Economically Disadvantaged”- 79.9%; and “Black”- 78.3%). [7]
ABC Results for EOGs
In terms of ABC proficiency performance, as compared to the three-year average (2007-08 through 2009-10), 2010-11 math proficiency increased from 88.0% to 89.3%; 2010-11 reading proficiency increased from 80.6% to 81.7%. Science proficiency over the same time period was relatively consistent with a three-year average of 92.7% and a 2010-11 proficiency of 93%. Comparing the three-year average to 2010-11, the number of non-proficient students was decreased by 11.1% for mathematics and decreased by 5.7% for reading. Since NBMS opened in 1998, it has held the highest EOG results in the district. [7]
ABC Results for EOCs
Algebra 1 proficiency remains consistently high at 99% for 2010-11 as compared to the three-year baseline of 99.3%. However, the number of students enrolled in Algebra 1 has significantly increased (N=45 for 2007-08; N=44 for 2008-09; N=54 for 2009-10; N=65 for 2010-11). [7]
VOCATS Results
For 2010-11, NBMS vocational courses exceeded state (73%) and district (85.3%) goals. (While ABC testing establishes Level 3 and above as the indicator of proficiency, Vocats designates proficiency at Level 2). The Business Computer Technology (6400) had an overall proficiency of 96.9% (157 students of 162 students scoring at Level 2). Keyboarding (6511) had an overall proficiency of 89.9% (161 students of 179 students scoring at Level 2). [7]
Ghost Stories
Students at New Bridge often share stories of spooky and unexplained happenings in the old building. Mostly strange sounds, some believe that the building is actually haunted by a ghost. [10] [11] [12] While three websites discuss the story, there is no verification from any reliable source.
