NRGreen Power

NRGreen Power Limited Partnership (“NRGreen”) is involved in the commercial development of electrical generation opportunities associated with the Canadian portion of the Alliance Pipeline natural gas transmission system. NRGreen is currently generating electricity at four Alliance Pipeline compressor stations at Kerrobert, Loreburn, Estlin and Alameda, all in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Overview

These units capture waste heat from each gas compressor package and pass it through a waste heat power generation unit. As this heat would otherwise be released directly into the atmosphere, this method of power generation is environmentally responsible because electricity can be produced without creating any additional greenhouse gases or other emissions. Each NRGreen waste heat power generation unit is designed to produce 5 megawatts of power – enough energy to power the equivalent of approximately 5,000 homes.

Components

Each waste heat power generation unit has three main components: a heat exchanger, a thermal oil loop (vaporizer) and an energy converter (turbine) [1].

Waste heat from the gas turbine which powers the gas compressor enters the heat exchanger and heats the heat transfer fluid (oil). Hot oil enters the vaporizer and vaporizes the motive fluid (pentane). Pentane vapor drives a turbine which is connected to an electrical generator. The pentane vapor is then condensed and re-used [2].

A unique feature[citation needed] of the waste heat power generation system is that it is entirely self-contained. Electricity leaves the station via transmission lines (owned by the power company) and goes to the power company’s grid for distribution to customers.
