The men's 10 metre air pistol competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics was held on August 14 at the Markópoulo Olympic Shooting Centre near Athens, Greece. Mikhail Nestruyev from Russia set a new Olympic record in the qualification round of 60 shots with 591 points, only two points from the world record. However the gold was not safe because Chinese veteran Wang Yifu was only one point behind with 590. The ten-shot final became a very tight duel between the two. Nestruyev still had a one point lead with only two shots remaining, but the Chinese could advance to finally win by an extremely thin margin of 0.2 points, winning his second Olympic gold medal and sixth Olympic medal overall. At a rather large distance from the major combatants, Nestruyev's countryman Vladimir Isakov took the bronze medal. A few days later, the tables were turned and Nestruyev finally won his Olympic gold medal, in the 50 metre pistol event.

Qualification round

The qualification round was held between 12:00 and 13:45 local time, immediately after the first final of the Games, the one in women's air rifle.
