NASW Press Journals

The National Association of Social Workers publishes five journals through its publications division, NASW PressSocial Work, Children & Schools, Health & Social Work, Social Work Research, and Social Work Abstracts.

Peer Review

NASW journals are peer-reviewed by their respective editorial boards. Editorial board members are appointed by the president of NASW. Appointees must be NASW members in good standing and must have a strong publishing background. Editorial boards seek original manuscripts that will stimulate professional dialogue. Manuscripts will not be rejected for publication because they are controversial or present unpopular stances or positions other than the prevailing view.

Environmental Responsibility

All NASW journals are published in both print and digital format. In 2008, NASW began printing its journals on Forest Stewardship Council certified paper to promote environmental responsibility.

Social Work

Social Work, established in 1956, is the official professional journal of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and is provided to all NASW members as a membership benefit[1]. It is also available to individuals, institutions, and libraries by subscription. The journal is published quarterly by the NASW Press, in January, April, July, and October. The annual subject-author index appears in the October issue.


Social Work is dedicated to improving practice and advancing knowledge in social work and social welfare. Major emphasis is placed on social policy and the solutions to serious human problems. Practice topics include HIV/AIDS, health care, aging, substance abuse, cultural competence, and more. Major emphasis is placed on social policy and the solutions to human problems. Professional issues such as pay equity, ethics, supervision, and malpractice claims also are addressed.

Health & Social Work

Health & Social Work publishes information for workers in all areas of the psychological, physiological, social, cultural, and environmental health sciences[2]. Each quarterly issue includes articles on practice advances in areas such as aging, clinical work, long-term care, oncology, substance abuse, depression, and mental health. Articles also cover research, policy, specialized services, quality assurance, in-service training, and other topics that affect the delivery of health care services. The journal is published quarterly by the NASW Press in February, May, August, and November. The annual subject-author index appears in the November issue.

Social Work Research

Social Work Research is a professional journal dedicated to advancing the development of knowledge and informing social work practice[3]. Articles include analytic reviews of research, theoretical articles pertaining to social work research, practice-based research, evaluation studies, and diverse research studies that contribute to knowledge about social work issues and problems. The journal is published quarterly by the NASW Press, in March, June, September, and December. The annual subject-author index appears in the December issue.

Children & Schools

Children & Schools, formerly Social Work in Education, was established in 1978[4]. The journal addresses practice issues faced by social workers employed in educational organizations and community agencies whose practice focuses on helping children and improving the conditions of children and schools. Topics include multiculturalism, early intervention, needs assessment, violence, ADHD, and student-authority relationships. The journal is published quarterly by the NASW Press, in January, April, July, and October. The annual subject-author index appears in the October issue.

Social Work Abstracts

Each quarter, with the exception of December, Social Work Abstracts publishes over 450 abstracts from U.S. and international journals and publications [5]. Dissertations are also included. The journal is published quarterly by the NASW Press, in March, June, September, and December. The annual author and subject indexes are published each December.
