National Registration Identity Card Number (Malaysia)

National Registration Identity Card Number (Malaysia)

The Malaysian National Registration Identity Card Number (abbreviated NRIC No.) is a unique series of digits issued to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents for indentification, indexing and tracking purposes. The National Registration Department of Malaysia is the sole authority in charge of issuing the NRIC numbers.

Current format

The current format of the Malaysian NRIC Number, introduced in 1990, features 12 digits separated into three sections by hyphens:

YYMMDD-BP-###G

The above format is the official format as printed on the official identity documents eg. MyKad. However, for database purposes (eg. sorting), the NRIC Number may have its hyphens omitted, hence:

YYMMDDBP###G

First section: Birthdate

YYMMDD represents the person's date of birth in the ISO 8601:2000 format. In cases where the person's actual date of birth according to the Gregorian calendar is uncertain, the date on which the person first applied for a MyKad is used, noted by an asterisk (*).

Second section: Birthplace

BP is based on the place of birth of the person, which will be referred from the birth certificate upon application of the MyKad. The following tables are the codes used for BP which represent the state of birth (within Malaysia) and country of birth (outside Malaysia) for the MyKad holder.[1][2]

Third section: Random number and Gender

###G represents a randomly generated serial number. The last digit, G denotes the gender of the person: odd numbers for males and even numbers for females.

MyID

The MyID is a Malaysian Government initiative that implements the National Registration Identity Card Number as the sole reference number for Malaysians in their transactions as an individual with the government agencies.[3]
