The Bangkok Christian College (Thai: โรงเรียนกรุงเทพคริสเตียนวิทยาลัย, short BCC) is the oldest private school of Thailand. It was established on September 30 1852 by American Presbyterian missionaries. It is considered to be the oldest school in Thailand offering a standard educational curriculum. Originally located in Thonburi ("Tambon" Koodeechine and Samray), the school was moved to its present location in the district Bang Rak in 1902.

The school has about 5000 students (only boys) in 12 grades and about 300 teachers. Even though it is a christian school, only about 5% of the students are of christian faith, but due to its high esteem it is popular to students of other faiths as well. 90% of the graduates continue with higher education.

History

Bangkok Christian College (BCC), the first privateboys’ school in the Kingdom of Thailand, was foundedon September 30th, 1852, in Tambon Koodeechine andTambon Samray with permission from His MajestyKing Rama IV. In 1902, the school was moved toPramuan road, and King RamaV donated money in theamount of 20 Chang to help with the purchase of thepiece of land for the development of the new campus. The school is operating under the supervision of theOffice of the Education Ministry within the Church ofChrist in Thailand. BCC was the first school in theKingdom to introduce contemporary approaches toEnglish language education by both native Englishspeakers and Thai teachers using English as the mediumof instruction. The school is also the first in Bangkokto provide an English Immersion Program (EIP). BCChas modern, well-equipped facilities including resourcelearning centers, self-access learning centers, libraries,an ample number of computers available forindependent and e-learning during class, athleticprograms with equipment and both indoor andoutdoor gymnasiums, authentic and high-interestteaching materials, and management informationsystems for teaching and administration management.

chool Philosophy

The philosophy of Bangkok Christian College isbased on Christian beliefs committed to educateeach student as a whole child in all aspects of life:physically, intellectually, spiritually, socially, andemotionally. The ultimate goal of the school is tonurture all students to become good citizens and livepeacefully with other people in Thai society and theworld at large.

B.C.C. seeks to promote four essential qualities : Loyalty, Responsibility, Honesty and Unity. B.C.C Students call those qualities as the "Spirit of B.C.C"

Unfortunately, social responsibility is severely compromised because local residents are constantly disturbed by the noise of loud hailers used to communicate with the students from about 6.45am every week day morning and sometimes during the whole day when they have other vacation activities, such as boy scout jamborees and rock band concerts. This occasionally involves martial music and Christian evangelist rhetoric, which might be offensive to local Buddhists, Muslims and atheists. This kind of local disturbance is completely unnecessary and cannot be good for children's social development.

English Immersion Program (EIP)

Bangkok Christian College took part in one of the first pilot projects for native-English education in Thailand. Commissioned by the Office of Private Education of the Thai Ministry of Education, BCC has provided an English-Thai bilingual education program to its students since 1995. Beginning with Prathom-1 (Grade 1), BCC has expanded the EIP by one grade level each year. BCC will provide a full K-12 program (Prathom-1 to Matthayom-6) by 2007.

Native English-speaking teachers instruct students in English, mathematics, science, computer technology, health education, physical education, music, and social studies. Qualified Thai teachers instruct students in Thai language, Buddhism, history, culture, art, and other important developmental activities such as boy scouts and student clubs.
