As one of eight clubs participating in the
A-League Adelaide United had to wait a while before competitive matches started. United played friendly matches against local teams and A-League teams and participated in two pre-season tournaments: the Club World Cup Qualification tournament and the Pre-Season Cup.Friendly
Adelaide United played in total twelve friendlies against
South Australian Premier League and State League clubs, as well as three matches against the otherA-League clubs.Club World Cup Qualifiers
Seven of the A-League clubs participated in a short tournament to find who would be Australia's representative at the FIFA Club World Cup in December. The New Zealand Knights did not compete, and Perth Glory received a bye into the second round.
Sydney FC went on to defeat the Mariners in the final.Pre-Season Cup
Adelaide United participated in Group B of the Pre-Season Cup.
