The Municipality of Hunucmá is one of the 106 subdivisions of the State of Yucatán in Mexico. Its municipal seat is the City of Hunucmá.

Location

The municipality is located in the metropolitan region of the State of Yucatán. It lies between latitudes 20º 55' and 21º 14' north and the longitudes 89º 48' and 90º 12' west.[1]

It borders the following municipalities: the north by the Gulf of Mexico, south to Samahil and Tetiz, east to Progress and Ucu and west Celestun.[1]

Communities

The municipality is made up of 13 different communities, of which the most important are:[1]

  • Hunucmá (municipal seat).
  • Texan de Palomeque.
  • Sisal.
  • Hunkanab.
  • San Antonio Chel.

Architectural Landmarks

These include a temple in honor of Santiago Apostle, built in the seventeenth century, a chapel dedicated to San Antonio, which do not have exact known years of construction, but they do date back to colonial times. A former convent and church of San Francisco built in the sixteenth century, the Guadalupe chapel dating from the eighteenth century as well as ex-haciendas of Santa Elena, San Joaquin and Chencopo.[1]

Notables

Notable locals include: Jose Leon Bojorquez Musician, composer and director of the Folk Orchestra of the State and Tipica de Yucalpetén.[1]
