Montana People's Action

Montana People's Action was a socially and racially DIVERSE, statewide, COMMUNITY based organization of low-moderate income Montanans. We EMPOWERED members to achieve lasting change for social, economic, and racial JUSTICE through DIRECT ACTION.

The organization was founded in 1982[1]

Over the course of its history, Montana People's Action organized thousands of farmers, renters, low wage workers, public program participants, mobile home court residents, urban indians and others to grow as leaders, build power, and win victories.

MPA supported the establishment of numerous cross-constituency alliances and coalitions, including the Montana Community Labor Alliance, the Montana Housing Partnership, the Coalition for Living Wage Jobs and others.

MPA supported the founding of and served as the home for Indian People's Action.

Facilitated leadership by Montana voices in regional and national efforts for social justice, including the Northwest Federation of Community Organizations (Alliance for a Just Society), the Center for Community Change, National People's Action, US Action, ACORN, the National Low Income Housing Coalition, and others.

Trained and developed generations of organizers and leaders who are making a difference in their communities and the world today. Jim Messina, Campaign Director President Barack Obama's 2012 reelection campaign began his career as a community organizer at Montana People's Action.[2]

SOME VICTORIES

  • Raised the minimum wage
  • Established the nation's first bill of rights for welfare recipients
  • Established the Montana Housing Trust Fund
  • Established Good Cause Eviction for mobile home court residents
  • Established Living Wage policies in Missoula, Bozeman, and elsewhere
