History

The Methodists began their missionary activities in the Deccan region of India in the mid 1800s. The South India Conference of the Methodists was also held in Hyderabad in 1884.[2] Two years earlier, a small chapel with a red brick exterior built was erected in the city of Secunderabad, a few blocks west of the Secunderabad Clock Tower, a local landmark. This church is the precessor of the much larger Millenium Methodist Church that stands today on the same spot. The old church was demolished at the turn of the millennium to make way for a larger structure in order to accommodate the increasing number Methodists in the city. The new church was consecrated in the year 2001 and was renamed the Millenium Methodist Church.[3]

On the occasion of the Indian Independence, many Methodists churches in India (particularly those with British connections) including Wesley Church, Secunderabad joined the ecumenical union of the Church of South India. Millenium Methodist church along with several other Methodists churches chose to be affiliated with the Methodist Conference of India instead.

Architecture

The original structure that existed prior to 2001 was a small Gothic chapel with a quait red exterior. It had a very low roof that is typical of many country churches in England. The new church is a roomy modern structure with elegant Gothic styled windows and doors delicately incorporated into the structure.[4]
