Formed in 1966 after a government buyout of failing private bus companies, the organization originally provided both urban and rural bus service throughout south-central Maine. During the 1970s, the organization was reformed as the primary urban mass transportation agency of Portland.
In 2006, Metro Bus bought 13 natural gas buses, as part of an eventual plan to phase out all vehicles that ran on traditional fuels (e.g., diesel fuel). As of 2009, about half the fleet is made up of natural gas powered buses.
Based in Portland and extending to Westbrook, South Portland and Falmouth, it is Maine's largest public transportation carrier. In 2009, it transported more than 1.4 million passengers.[1]
