The Messapio or Mesapio Mountains (Greek: Μεσσάπιο), older forms: -on, also known as Ktypas (Κτυπάς) is a mountain range located in the northeastern Viotia prefecture and the western mainland Evia in Greece, it is bounded near the Euripus Strait. The mountains are named after the mythical area. It is 20 km long and 10 to 15 km wide and covers and area of 300 km². Much of the mountain are forested with pines, cypresses and cedars, grasslands are founded in smaller parts and is rich in aninals along with foxes, squirrels? and wolves. It has another mountaintop elevating 836 m and another in the mid-east at 563 m, it had different names including Lykovouni (Λυκοβούνι, the wolf mountain) and Galatsideza (Γαλατσίδεζα). Yliki and Paralimni lakes are situated to the west along with the (Boeotian) Kifissos which empties into the lake, Cape Gaidaros and a small island lies to the north. Grasslands are in the lower elevations and forests in the higher elevations.

Nearby mountain ranges includes a small range of hills to the south and Ptoo to the west.

Information

Several streams flows around the area including one to the South Euboean Gulf, another to Lake Yliki and another to the North Euboean Gulf. The old highway, the GR-44 (Thiva - Chalkida - Karystos) is to the south, GR-77 (Schimatari - Chalkida - Aidipsos) to the south and the superhighway GR-1/E75 (Athens - Thessaloniki) to the south encircling as far as 17 km. The road linking Thiva and Drosia via Loukissia is in its west and the middle portion crosses through.

It offers the view of two lakes listed above, the Kifissos and the ancient Kopaida valley to the west, Parnitha, Kithairon and Pastra to the south, Elikon, Parnassos and Chlomonas to the west, Fthiotida to the northwest and the island of Evia along with parts of its northern mountains including Kandili Dirfys and Olympus to the east.

History

Messapio (Messapion) was first mentioned by Pausanias in Boiotika[1].

The mountain has preserved several sources on its old residents of the area for the emphasis on wolves and jackals. Fires broke out at the mountain in the last decated,[when?] it stripped the mountains, with the occurrence on the greater area that made a large ecological damage and it had and has necessary reforestation. The first recorded big fire on Messapio occurred from an arson by the German-Italian forces during the occupation 1944, for the local Greek resistance honors and the latest in July 2009 in the area around Ritsonas.
