Matthew "Murph" Edward Murphy^[1] (born 23 July 1984) is an English musician, best known for singing, playing guitar and keyboard for The Wombats.

The Wombats

Matthew is part of Liverpool trio The Wombats alongside Dan Haggis (drums) and Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass guitar); "at first The Wombats were a joke they didn't want anyone to find funny". Murph once even said that: "In the middle of the songs we'd break into uncontrollable screaming. The idea was not to be funny." ^[2]
The band was initially launched when The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts gave them the chance to play various gigs.
They then ended up gaining radioplay in the UK with songs like: "Moving to New York", "Backfire at the Disco" which led them to release "Kill The Director" as a full single. They then released "Let's Dance to Joy Division" with huge success following with a European tour and finally a Christmas Party at Liverpool Academy.

The band's new single, "Our Perfect Disease", was released on 14 August 2011.

The band's second album, entitled "This Modern Glitch" was released on 25 April 2011 as a CD, digital download and also as 7" and 12" Vinyls.

Publicity/Television Appearances

Matthew Murphy appeared on an episode of the popular Australian music quiz show Spicks and Specks hosted by Adam Hills. Murphy was a contestant in the episode and Knudsen and Haggis appeared on the show, performing the Postman Pat theme song, in Norwegian.

Early life

He was raised in Huyton just outside of Liverpool in Knowsley on the Paramount estate area of Huyton. Matthew was educated at Liverpool College and at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts where he met his fellow band mates Tord Overland Knudsen and Daniel Haggis

Equipment

While playing live with The Wombats, Murphy is known to use a Fender Blue Flower Telecaster and an Orange AD30HTC amp head used with an Orange PPC212 cab.
